Rinse asparagus under cold water and pat completely dry. Trim off the woody ends.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil or butter.
Place asparagus in a single layer in the pan.
Cook undisturbed for 1 to 2 minutes to allow light browning.
Toss occasionally and continue cooking for 4 to 6 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.
Add minced garlic during the last minute of cooking if using.
Season with salt and black pepper.
Remove from heat and finish with a squeeze of lemon juice and optional red pepper flakes.
Serve immediately.
